CHAPTER 21

Longsaddle was nowhere near the bustling metropolis of a city like Baldur’s Gate or Neverwinter, but it still felt worlds away from their tiny village when Edgin, Kira, and Forge rode into town. Kira pointed and gasped at the street performers and the crowded city market with goods on offer from all corners of Faerûn. Sitting behind her on the horse, Edgin could feel her excitement as she bounced in the saddle.

He should travel with her more, Edgin thought, chiding himself for not thinking of this earlier. There were places he’d seen in his time as a Harper that Kira would love. She would be dazzled by the Walking Statues of Waterdeep or the skyline of Baldur’s Gate at sunset.

Once they had the profit from this score, he’d take her out of Targos, and they could see more of the world together. They’d take the whole crew, in fact. It would be amazing.

Again, Edgin felt that glow of happiness nudging him in the chest. He tried not to dwell on it too much. They still had work to do, he reminded himself.

That didn’t mean they couldn’t have fun though. He poked Kira in the shoulder as they passed a merchant’s stall with flowing silks and gems. “We need to go fancy clothes shopping while we’re here,” he said.

Kira’s face lit up like a sunrise. Edgin soaked it in.

Fifteen minutes later, the glow of happiness had evaporated. “Seriously?” Edgin said as they stood in front of Lady Sofina’s townhouse.

“I swear it’s not as bad as it looks,” Forge said.

Edgin gave him an incredulous stare. “Prisons are more accessible than this place,” he said, pointing to the barred windows and the large, reinforced oak door, not to mention the iron fence that ran the length of the property and the guards standing in front of gates that barred entry to a sculpted strip of lawn and rose beds leading up to the house.

“It wasn’t like this the last time I was here,” Forge said, with a rueful expression. “It’s possible that Lady Sofina, after our last encounter, didn’t feel she had adequate security measures in place for the more nefarious characters in Longsaddle.”

“Meaning this is your fault,” Edgin said flatly. “You’re the reason for the guards and the iron bars.”

“Regrettably, yes.”

Kira looked at Forge with a raised eyebrow that she’d clearly learned from Holga. “What did you do to her?”

“Never mind,” Edgin said quickly. He looked at Forge and gestured to the guards. “Go on,” he said. “This is your show. Give it your best shot.”

“You can do it,” Kira said encouragingly. Forge offered her a faint smile.

“I suppose you’re right,” he said. “Time to face the music.”

Edgin clapped him on the shoulder. “We’ll be standing right back here in the street a safe distance away if you need us.”

“Wonderful backup you are,” Forge said, but he gamely approached the guards. After a short conversation and a discreet offering of coin on Forge’s part, the taller of the two guards left them and went inside the townhouse.
